Downtown Facelift on City Council Agenda

The Marina City Council will be looking to give downtown Marina a bit of a facelift Tuesday night with the expected approval of two major contracts to clean things up.

First off, the City Council will be presented with the design for the Del Monte Boulevard and Reservation Road Intersection Improvements Project. The goal of the project, according to the city’s staff report, is to improve access for every type of transportation at the intersection and improve safety at the same time. It got a big boost when the City was selected for a Regional Surface Transportation Program grant for $ 1.7 million for the design and construction of pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements at the intersection.

Currently, the intersection is bit of a problem. The south leg of the intersection does not have a crosswalk, and there are no markings to delineate where bicycles should be when they conflict with auto traffic. The proposed improvements include a protected intersection design for bikes and pedestrians, updated traffic signals, shortened crosswalks, curb extensions and transition ramps at the corners, new landscaping and more.

Park Clean-Up

The Council is being asked by city staff to approve the plans for the project and call for bids. After that, the council will address the growing mess at Locke-Paddon Park.

The health of the pond and community access to it have become a concern due to vegetation overgrowth, according to the city staff report. The next step would be to have a qualified biologist assess the conditions at the pond and recommend both a short and long-term plan for maintenance. It seems to be assumed that any plan will call for removal of vegetation both in the short term and ongoing for the long term.

Blight Removal

Earlier in the evening, on the council’s Consent Agenda, is the awarding of a contract for a little more than $1.25 million to Randazzo Enterprises in Castroville for Phase II the city’s Building Blight Removal Project.

Phase I of Marina’s Building Blight Removal Project was completed in November. It consisted of removing 45 buildings located along Second and 8th Street and 30 more buildings at the Cypress Knolls area along Rendova and Third Avenue.

Phase II of the project will consist of removing 13 more barracks located Second Avenue and Third Street, and a fire station located at 9th Street and California Avenue. Two trees that are unhealthy will also be removed, and potentially three more trees if they cannot be brought back to health.

Four companies bid on the project under seal, with Randazzo coming in about $300,000 less than W.C. Maloney from Stockton. Randazzo was also the only company of the four that located within 60 miles from Marina.

HOMES LISTED IN THE PAST WEEK

Just today, this 2-bath, 2-bed condominium at 3095 Marina Drive went on the market. For $630,000, it offers many people a chance to get into the market.

And last week, two more somewhat affordable homes hit the market. At 3294 Tallmon Street is this 3-bedroom, 2-bath that surely won’t last long. Neither will this 4-bedroom, 2-bath home at 303 Reindollar for $829,000.
