City Council Eyes Bond Measure
The next City Council meeting will be held Aug. 7 at the City Council chambers at 211 Hillcrest Ave. in Marina. An agenda is due Aug. 4. by 5 p.m.
The City Council has been talking about how to pay a bill of about $55 million for the construction of a new fire and police station, as well as a community center to house the City Council chambers and the community and recreation rooms.
That topic will be at the center of the Aug. 7 meeting when the council will finalize the language of the bond measure proposed to pay for it. Aug. 7 is also the deadline for adding a measure to the ballot.
The vote to put the measure on the ballot passed 3-1, with Mayor Bruce Delgado voting against because he said doesn’t believe the idea has a realistic chance of approval by voters in Marina. Instead of a $50 million bond, the council could have opted for a $16 million bond to pay for just a new fire station, or a $33.5 million bond to pay for a new fire station and police station.
According to city staff, the cost of a $50 million bond will add about $272 in taxes annually for a home in Marina valued at about $500,000. The average price of a home in Marina is about $1.13 million.
Roundabout Project Continues
The Imjin Parkway Widening and Roundabout Project continues on pace, according to the website imjinparkway.com. Crews are continuing to set formwork for the concrete retaining wall near Abrams Drive; continue to construct the fill slope between Abrams Drive and Marina Heights Drive; are creating curbs along Imjin Parkway west of Preston Drive; and have begun setting forms for a concrete retaining wall near Marina Heights Drive. All of the work at present is being done during the day.
Coming up, crews will begin installing underground utilities for irrigation, street lighting and fiber conduits. In fact, it looks like this work has begun earlier than anticipated. Retaining walls near Abrams Drive and Marina Heights Drive will soon be started, as well as grading operations between Reservation and Abrams Drive.
