Marina Recovers From Storm
A wet and windy Friday night led to more than 8,000 residents left without power in Marina for most of Saturday and Sunday. More than 25,000 people across the peninsula lost power, according to PG&E.
According to PG&E, winds toppled trees into power lines and shut power down for most of Marina from about 6:30 a.m. Saturday to almost 6 p.m. Sunday. And still, according to an outage map found on the San Francisco Chronicle’s website, about 190 Marina residents lost power at 4:20 p.m. on Sunday and are expected to have power back on today before 6 p.m.
Businesses in downtown Marina were back open Monday morning, but some still were struggling with the aftermath as telephone land lines were still out. On social media, residents were mostly unhappy with PG&E and mostly due to the lack of communication. The actual status of repairs was a bit of a mystery. Social media showed some people buying ice less than 30 minutes before power was back on.
Social media also showed the difference between having planned for an emergency and not. Having candles, flashlights and a way to eat food makes a huge difference. Thankfully, my wife and I like to camp and have large solar batteries we keep charged that can power lights and even the refrigerator for a short time. We still have a gas stove and could light the burners. For us, it wasn’t a big deal. Some of my neighbors had gas generators and had no issues at all, while a few others needed help: food, candles, a flashlight, etc.
The lesson: Be prepared and these events are manageable.
City To Discuss Plan B
After the recent failure of Measure U, meant to fund new fire and police stations, along with a new community building, the City Council will discuss what to do going forward during Tuesday’s night’s City Council meeting and “provide direction on possible next steps that will help the city to develop a Plan B for options and alternatives to identify a path for these facilities to get built,” according to the council’s agenda notes.
Measure U needed two-thirds majority to pass and received 60% approval, which is actually closer to passage than most would have expected. To get that vote over the hurdle, city staff are requesting the council consider identifying specific locations for the facilities, a phasing plan and developing other funding sources. They will also look at a new ballot measure with possibly a smaller target, such as funding just the fire and police stations.
Mayor Makes Appointments
The mayor’s annual City Council member assignments, including the naming of the vice-mayor will likely be made official at Tuesday’s meeting. Mayor Bruce Delgado has selected Liesbeth Visscher as Mayor Pro Tem. The other assignments are to represent the city on various regional boards and committees, such as the Monterey Regional Waste Management District (Delgado), the Monterey-Salinas Transit committee (Visccher), Monterey County Convention & Visitors Bureau (Visccher), Transportation Agency of Monterey County (Delgado), Access Monterey Peninsula (Brian McCarthy), Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments (McCarthy), and the Monterey County Mosquito Abatement District (Nancy Amadeo).
No public hearings are scheduled. The only other action items besides the Measure U discussion on the agenda include a presentation on Habitat Management Resource Plan, and a discussion on how to celebrate Marina’s 50th anniversary. The only decision to be among the action items is whether to alter the design of Dunes City Park to create some pickle ball courts from some of the planned tennis courts.
